Miriam was Moses's sister. As the Jews fled from Egypt, and the Red Sea parted, she played her tambourine along with her circle of women. She is considered the "Prophetess of Israel".
This piece is a collagraph and a monotype, with Hebrew calligraphy. To make a collograph, a plexiglass plate was inked, and natural elements were laid onto it. It was run through a flat bed press. The plants were removed, and then wet ,100% cotton rag paper was laid on top of the plate and run through the press. For the monotype, the figure was drawn and painted with brush work. Monotypes are the most painterly of printmaking techniques. Finally, the calligraphy was hand done.
