This piece celebrates the dahlias in the height of summer. I grow dahlias, and live for them all summer. I visit my garden morning, noon, and night. I'm so inspired by their lyrical shapes and colorful glory. I especially love the buds before they burst open. They are pure poetry to me.
This piece is a collagraph and a pressure print. It is made by drawing on mat board, Then going over the lines with Matte Medium which is applied from a standard tip "Fineline" Applicator. The entire plate is sealed front, back, and sides with Matte medium. Once the plate is sealed it can be used again and again. To clean, use baby oil. The background is made by inking a plexiglass plate and laying a piece of textured fabric over it. When the fabric is removed a pattern is revealed. Wet paper is laid on top and run through a flat bed press. Then the collagraph is inked with a brayer, and placed on the paper and run through the press again. Finally, colored pencils are applied to enhance the composition.
