Flying Geese

Flying Geese is part of the Quilt Codes of the Underground Railroad. When the pattern was displayed for those fleeing slavery, the message is believed to have been to follow the way north, as indicated by the direction in which the geese were flying.

This original collagraph is created from a raised image on a flat plate. The plate is sealed and inked, then run through a flatbed press with soaked cotton rag paper laid on top to transfer the image. The rhythm of the repeating triangles gives the piece movement and a strong sense of direction, a fitting symbol of the journey toward freedom.

At 30" x 22", it is a large, graphic piece for a living room, hallway, office, school, or library. It is a meaningful choice for anyone drawn to quilt art, Underground Railroad history, and art with a story to tell. It comes unframed, ready for custom framing.
